Autism, characterized by atypical functioning in the field of social communication and the presence of limited, repeated patterns of behavior and interests, was described from the beginning mainly in boys. The gender disproportion in the autism spectrum population is about 4: 1 in favor of the male sex, and in the case of people within the intellectual norm, the reported numerical advantage of men is even greater. In the 21st century, however, there were many studies showing that autism may not be as rare in women as previously thought.
